Jonas Flodager Rasmussen known professionally as simply Rasmussen is a Danish singer and actor. He represented Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal, with the song “Higher Ground”.
He studied dramaturgy and music at Aarhus University and works as a teacher at both the School of Performing Arts at Viborg Cultural School and Aarhus Theatre Learning.
Rasmussen is the lead singer and frontman of the 1980s cover band Hair Metal Heröes. He has also worked as a stage actor, performing in stage productions of musicals such as West Side Story, Rent and Les Misérables. Rasmussen won the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2018 on 10 February and went on to represent Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 on 12 May 2018, where he placed 9th.
Rasmussen performed in the Eurovision Song Contest accompanied by other great singers: Jesper Paasch, Daniel Firth, Gustav Emil Bresler, Mads Engelhardt, and Anders Ørsager (this last singer is joining the four singers, but not singing during the performance).
It was a great performance that impressed me very much, even though I do not belong to the Viking culture, and these five artists managed to make me feel part of their culture for a few minutes. That’s what motivated me to interview them.
This time I interview Jonas Flodager Rasmussen.
We have shown him two different videos: kizomba and semba. He has agreed to give us his opinion.
“Thank you for the videos 🙂
So, I definitely enjoyed watching the videos – these Latin dances, if done well, always keeps me interested.
(SEMBA VIDEO) The first one I thought was very playful, it made me smile a lot, the dancers seem to have a great time with each other, and the little quirks, like stomping their feet together and him lifting her food with his, makes it light and easy to watch.
(KIZOMBA VIDEO) The second was much more sensual in my opinion (but that’s probably just because I’m from a non-latin country 🙂 )
There was more heat between the dancers, and they moved gracefully”
Hello. It is great to have you with us, please, tell us a little bit about yourself. Your background, education etc?
Thanks, Well, I ’ve played music since the age of 10-‐11. At first in a band as a piano player, then in a band as choir and lead guitarist, and lastly in a band as lead vocals and rhythm-‐guitarist. Then I started doing musical theatre and singing around Europe in an acapella choir, before entering the university from where I got a degree in music and drama – Master of Arts.
Who are your musical inspirations?
My biggest musical inspirations are definitely The Beatles and Paul McCartney. But I have a lot of different musical inspirations. I love such bands as Queen, Led Zeppelin, Mötley Crüe, and soloists such as Billy Joel, Alice Cooper, Elton John, and Kim Larsen. Vocally, my biggest inspirations are Adam Lambert, Steve Perry (Journey), Michael Jackson, Ramin Karimloo and Colm Wilkinson
What album or song is most special for you?
My favorite album is Abbey Road by the Beatles. Two others of my favorite songs are Hallelujah (Cohen) and Book of Love (cover by Peter Gabriel)
Could you tell us about your experience at the Eurovision Song Contest?
My Eurovision experience was amazing. Such a joy to celebrate music with so many different types of people, cultures, and artists. An experience I’ll forever hold very close to my heart.
Everybody needs time out. What do you do in your free time?
Of course, I spend a lot of time with my kids. Time goes by so fast, so I make sure that they always know that I love them more than anything, and nothing is more important than to be there for them. Besides that, I love watching Tv-series
What are your future plans? Your vision for the coming years.
I just wanna enjoy every single experience I get to have because of the Eurovision adventure. And I want to continue making music, singing, and pass my musical knowledge to talented young people.
How can people find you and follow you online?
They can find me on Instagram and Facebook. My Instagram name is ‘bonjonesy’ and my Facebook page is simply ‘Rasmussen’
